Planed square but will have sharp edges, rough surfaces and may still contain marks from transport, weathering and machining. Perfect for trades people who have the equipment and experience to finish to their taste.
Important: Please note the following before purchasing:
- If you are looking for a custom size beam, please order the size above what you require and specify your chosen size in the 'Order Notes' section of the checkout. We will ensure that it is planed to your specific required dimensions.
- The cross-section sizes listed are starting sizes and will reduce by up to 3/4 of an inch after being planed so you may wish to order the next size up to allow for this. For example 6" x 6" starting size will reduce down to no more than approx. 5.25" x 5.25", 8" x 6" starting size will reduce down to no more than approx. 7.25" x 5.25" etc, the length will remain as selected.
- Please refer to imperial sizes (inches and feet) for accurate lengths and cross-sections. Metric dimensions provide an approximate translation.
- Ensure that your beam is taken out of its wrapping immediately after receiving the delivery to allow it to breathe and adjust.
- We do not pre-drill beams as customers will need to ensure that fixings are secured to the wall are in the correct place.
Oak is a natural product and therefore each individual piece will be different in appearance and will vary slightly in colour and grain. Our character grade beams may well already contain knots, surface cracks, pinholes and waney edges and cracks would be expected to develop further once they acclimatise to a new environment after purchase. Although our beams are air-dried, it also is not unusual for the oak to develop further shrinkage and movement as it continues to dry and adjust to your property's temperature. If your beam is going to go above a fire, log burner, fire or intense heat, we recommend that the heat should be gradually increased over a period of a week or more if possible.
All of our oak is PEFC certified, meaning that it is sustainably sourced, and the forest management is environmentally appropriate, economically viable and socially beneficial management for present and future generations.
Depending on your choice of beam size, we can supply you with a choice of straight brackets, T-Shape Brackets or keyhole brackets; should you have a preference, please leave a note in the 'Order Notes' section of the checkout when purchasing your oak beam. If no notes have have been added we will send out straight brackets with all beam sizes apart from ones with a 2" projection out from the wall where we will send out keyhole brackets.

Ordered on a Friday received the following Thursday very well packed excellent service. Bought planed version took the edge’s off and lightly sanded before treating with pure oil really pleased with finish.
Would have been good if it had come pre drilled , but if confident easy enough.
After taking an age investigating my Oak mantle options online with mixed results. Criteria was cost and quality. I found that Celtic Timber met all my requirements. The purchasing process was simple enough, delivered as promised professionally and on time. Packaging was immense. Unwrapping my 4' x 6" x 4" Planed Oak Mantle finish surpassed my expectations. I set-out the position, sanded to the required finish and applied the 'Pure' Coloured Wood Oil (50% of the Oil supplied was all I needed). Awaited the allotted 24 hours for drying out. Affixed the 4No Straight Brackets to my timber stud wall (NB to Tech Dept fixings Galvenised Steel material appeared a tad soft). In my opinion no need for the adjustment with the fixings. Both me and the boss were made up with Oak Mantle. Celtic TImber take a bow :) 10/10. Next project on her list is an Oak Post at our property entrance ;).
